Chapter 10
Linzi
Martha left as the afternoon sun pulled toward the western slope of the sky. Linzi, still dizzy from the drink and her shoulder on fire, hugged her friend and slowly trudged into the house, shame sitting heavy on her from her actions. What was she thinking? Her father would surely kill her.
Speaking of which, she needed to check on him again. She walked into his room, a soft hiccup leaving her lips as she reached over and touched his head, jerking her hand back at the scorching heat. "Oh no... no..." She rushed to the kitchen and grabbed the pail of water and a washcloth, her lunch pushing from her stomach into her chest. She felt like she was going to be sick from the fear threatening her. She needed Kenton. She didn't know what to do for a fever other than cold water and medicine they didn’t have.
The sheets were soaked, her father's color more flushed than the red of her new rose ink marking. She knelt beside him and bathed his head, his eyes opening only slightly as he muttered something. She leaned in and pressed her ear near his mouth. "What Da'?"
"Wa—her."
"Water?" She jumped off the bed, her shoulder burning from the large marking Martha had spent the entire afternoon making. She ignored the discomfort and raced to the small kitchen, fumbling with the cups as one fell on the floor before her and cracked in half. She kicked it aside and grabbed another. Once filled, she raced back, spilling half along the way. Weight spread, she leaned over to cradle her father's head in the crook of her elbow. She lifted him up, pouring the water down his throat slowly. He choked and she pulled back, cursing herself for not being more careful.
She helped him lay back down, his eyes opening a little more as he spoke, his voice a raspy whisper. "Linzi, I-I need med’cine.” He swallowed painfully. “I'm ’eeling ill."
It meant going to town. On her own. She picked up the rag, leaning in and wiping at his head. "Of course, Da'. I'll go to the lady at the edge of town.” The lady liked the bread she made and there was a loaf from yesterday that was meant for tomorrow. She’d trade eating a day for the safety of her father. “I'll take bread to her and..." Linzi let her voice trail off as her heart caught a scared rhythm.
She leaned over and tilted her head, sighing with relief to hear his ragged breath moving in and out of his parched lips. She had to be fast. Night was drawing close and it wouldn't be but a few hours of sunlight left for her trip. She pulled the blanket around him, worried at the dampness of it, but knowing there was nothing more she could offer.
In the kitchen she wrapped up the bread and also took the remaining cheese. She would give the old woman anything she wanted in order to get herbs and medicine for her father.
